Edison Township, existing as an independent Township for over 100 years, received its name in 1954 when voters decided to change its name from Raritan Township. The change was made in honor of Thomas Alva Edison, who worked in Menlo Township from 1878– 1887, perfecting his incandescent light bulb and laboring over a number of other inventions
